Band Directors

The Bradley Middle School Band is an award-winning music program and is part of the North East Independent School District in San Antonio, Texas.

The band directors are Emily Gurwitz – egurwi@neisd.net and Karlos Elizondo .

Emily Gurwitz - Head Director, Bradley Middle School (North East ISD, San Antonio, Texas)

Mrs. Gurwitz, head band director at Bradley Middle School, is a product of NEISD schools and has been teaching middle school band for over twenty years. She attended Coker Elementary, Eisenhower Middle School and Churchill High School. After Churchill High School, Mrs. Gurwitz received her Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Trinity University in San Antonio and her Master of Music in Flute Performance from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Under her direction, the Bradley Middle School Bands have received consistent Sweepstakes Awards, as well as other awards at various competitions throughout the state. In 2013, the Bradley Middle School Honor Band placed first in the TMEA Region 12 Honor Band competition. Mrs. Gurwitz has been a clinician for middle school band programs across the city and recently was the clinician for the ATSSB Middle School Region Band 1 in Lytle, Texas.

Mrs. Gurwitz teaches private high school flute students. Her students have placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the state in the 5A (now 6A) competition. Her flute students have also won various concerto competitions and have been awarded scholarships to study music at many different universities in Texas.

Mrs. Gurwitz has been married to Elliott Gurwitz, who is the web specialist for North East ISD Construction Management Department, for 18 years. They have two children, Ethan who is 18 and Zoe who is 14.

Karlos Elizondo

Karlos Elizondo, a native of San Antonio and a product of NISD, is completing his 12th year of teaching. He received his formal education from Texas State University in 2005 and is in progress of receiving his Master’s degree. Prior to his arrival in the Judson ISD, Mr. Elizondo served as Grammar Hall Band Director at Regents School of Austin, where he worked with 5th and 6th grade bands. Mr. Elizondo also has extensive experience as a High School Band Director as well, serving as Asst. Band Director as Tom C Clark High School (Northside ISD), Director of Bands at McCollum High School (Harlandale ISD), and Assoc. Band Director and Choir Director at Burbank High School (San Antonio ISD). Mr. Elizondo has consistently led bands to Sweepstakes, Division 1 ratings, and consistently places in the top 3 at various competitions in and around Texas, both in concert band and jazz bands.

Mr. Elizondo began playing trumpet in 1st grade and has continued ever since. He has performed locally, nationally and internationally with various artists/groups, such as: The Temptations, The Four Tops, Frankie Valle & The Four Seasons, Tito Puente, Jr., Ruben Ramos, The Latin Breed, and The San Antonio Symphony, just to name a few. His performances have taken him all over the world to places such as: Switzerland, Ireland, Australia, Mexico, Italy, Czechoslovakia & various other places. Locally, Mr. Elizondo leads The Powerhouse Big Band and can be found performing regularly in and around San Antonio. Currently, Mr. Elizondo serves as the Lead Trumpet for the Doc Watkins Orchestra at Jazz, TX and also tours around the country with The GAP Band, playing Lead Trumpet and also serves as their music arranger.

Mr. Elizondo has been married to Madeline Elizondo, who is a performing opera/jazz vocalist and a private voice teacher, for 14 years. They have 2 kids, Amelie who is 5 and Karlos who is 2.
